Couples coaching, online
A marriage counseling alternative for when counseling didn’t fix it.
You did the counseling. You sat on the couch, learned the tools, and for a while it was better. Then the same fight came back like it had never left. If that’s where you are, you didn’t fail at marriage counseling. You worked hard on the wrong layer. This page is about what to do instead.
Why marriage counseling so often stalls
Here’s the tell. You can feel the argument starting. You know exactly which tool you’re supposed to reach for. And you still can’t stop it. That’s because the tools work on how you talk, and the stuck part of a marriage lives underneath how you talk. Somewhere along the way, each of you reached a private verdict about the other. He doesn’t really respect me. She’s never going to be satisfied. Once that verdict is in, every skill gets read through it. A soft start-up sounds rehearsed. An apology sounds like a move. The method I use goes at the verdict itself, and The Unforgiven Self lays out how decent people end up holding one. If your version of this is that couples therapy specifically came and went, that exact situation has its own page: coaching after couples therapy didn’t work.
When you actually need therapy, not an alternative
Some situations need therapy, and I’ll tell you if yours is one of them. I trained as a therapist and work as a coach, and I keep that line sharp: I don’t diagnose or treat mental health conditions. If there’s violence or intimidation at home, if drinking or drugs are steering the marriage, or if one of you is carrying untreated depression or trauma, then a licensed therapist is the right call. I’ll help you find one. An alternative to marriage counseling is never an alternative to treatment. The full comparison is here: coaching vs therapy. And since the most common alternative people actually try first is now a chatbot, that comparison has its own page: ChatGPT vs a couples coach.
What the coaching alternative looks like
Sessions are 60 minutes, over encrypted video, and this sits inside my regular online couples coaching practice. Most couples do twelve sessions across about three months, in four stages, with a written note from me at the halfway point. There’s a shorter five-session version for couples whose real question is whether to stay at all. And if your partner is done trying, you can start on your own. The work stays practical and current: the fight you had on Tuesday, the moment it turned, and what each of you decided that moment meant.
Why the training behind it matters
An alternative shouldn’t mean settling for less training. My background is clinical: a master’s in counseling from La Salle University, a master’s in sociology from UC Berkeley, and an eighteen-month internship at a psychotherapy center in Philadelphia. I bring all of that to coaching, because the layer under the fight is where the training earns its keep. More about me and how I work.
The usual questions
Common questions about the coaching alternative
How is this different from marriage counseling?
Marriage counseling is a clinical service from a licensed therapist, and it usually centers on communication skills. This is coaching: focused, practical work on the argument that keeps coming back, and on the conclusions you’ve each quietly drawn about the other underneath it. I trained as a therapist, so the depth is there, but I don’t diagnose or treat. Different tool, honestly labeled.
When is marriage counseling or therapy the right choice instead?
When something clinical is in the room. Violence or control, addiction that’s steering the marriage, untreated depression or trauma. Those need a licensed professional, and coaching is no substitute. If that’s your situation, I’ll say so in the free call and point you toward the right help.
We already spent months in counseling. Why would this be different?
Because it works a different layer. Counseling taught you how to talk. This work goes after what you’ve each privately concluded about the other, which is the thing that keeps hijacking how you talk. If the tools failed you, that’s usually why.
Can I start without my partner?
Yes. You’re half of the pattern, and half is enough to begin. Plenty of people start alone, and their partner joins later once something at home actually shifts.
Is this online? Where do you work?
Everything is online, over encrypted video, with couples in all US states. You join from home, and partners in two different places just join from two screens.
What’s the first step?
You send me a short private note about what’s going on. Three quick steps, and you only give contact details at the last one. I read it myself and reply within two business days. Then a free twenty-minute video call, where I’ll tell you honestly whether this is a fit.
